Use and Develop Systems That Promote Communication Essay 1.1 Review the range of groups and individuals whose communication needs must be addressed in own job role ââ¬Å"Developing excellent communication skills is absolutely essential to effective leadership. The leader must be able to share knowledge and ideas to transmit a sense of urgency and enthusiasm to others. If a leader cant get a message across clearly and motivate others to act on it, then having a message doesnt even matter. ââ¬â Gilbert Amelio President and CEO of National Semiconductor Corp. The above statement makes a huge impact, and in the role as manager this is so true. Communication both professionally and personally starts with considerate, open and honest foundations. My team includes over 50 staff members without including the many visitors, and members of the multidisciplinary team. Everyone is different and should be treated individually; you learn very quickly peopleââ¬â¢s individual communication styles. You are dealing with a wide range of personalities and abilities and your own communication style has to deliver to a diverse group with differing skill sets, and communication abilities. My level of communication within my job role is of extreme importance with regards to the client who should be at the heart of all communication around any establishment or company. Dealing with people with hearing impairments, disabilities, cerebral palsy to name a few, it is essential my communication is clear and not lengthy. Effective communication is what enables all the different departments to work well within the organization including liaising with external agencies and individuals such as the CQC, Social Services, Continuing Health Care, Hospices and health professionals. It is also essential that whatever the form of communication, be it written, electronic, organizational, promotional, verbal, non-verbal, confidentiality is maintained. Read more: Use and Develop Systems That Promote Communication As a manager in a care centre the groups and individuals I work with are varied and can range from clients with disabilities that effect many senses from hearing loss to those with sight loss or impairment. Plus the different members of the multi disciplinary team. Clients who are profoundly deaf may have the ability to sign or those with partial loss all need support to ensure they can be understood and they can communicate to the best of their ability. Key statistics state from Access Economics states that over two million people in the UK are living with sight loss and as we age we are increasingly likely to experience sight loss. Projected statistics of Dementia show there will be over one million people by 2021 and this effects peoples short and sometimes long term memory, speech, orientation, and general well being. We have clients that are borderline and able to stay with us because we can meet their needs. Dementia training is undertaking by all staff to increase the awareness and ability of everyone within the centre to support these individuals. Also in my care I have individuals with Parkinsonââ¬â¢s, clients with Multiple Sclerosis, so it is a broad, challenging and extremely rewarding position when you see things ultimately manifest into cohesive functionality. 1.2 Explain how to support effective communication within own job role Within my role this is done by establishing the appropriate level of support and my role is to empower and promote the individuals rights. One of my observations during my time at work on the following criteria with relevant evidence as feedback from my assessor involved running a meeting with staff from all departments. Everyone has the right to communicate in which ever way is better for them and this is highlighted under the Human Rights Act 1998 which points out the freedom of expression and everyone should having the right to communicate. It is also part of my responsibility to see that the needs and preferences are assessed correctly and a benchmark can be established so we can see what level of support is required. This is done through completing documentation and making thorough assessments and continual monitoring. Any alterations are recorded and reviews and changes are highlighted to the team. There are always key elements to assessments and reviews, including the family and friends. Everyone has a responsibility to support individuals and bearing in mind ââ¬Ëneed to knowââ¬â¢ information. The aim being able to achieve the highest goal to maintain effective open channels for everyone. In my role partnerships with: â⬠¢ Family and friends â⬠¢ Care Staff â⬠¢ GPââ¬â¢s â⬠¢ Nutritionalists â⬠¢ Speech Therapists â⬠¢ Social Workers â⬠¢ Physiotherapists â⬠¢ Consultants â⬠¢ Other Nursing Home Managers â⬠¢ Central Office All the above are people I may work with in order to gain information, which supports me in my role in making the best decisions and judgmentsââ¬â¢. Everyone needs educating and supporting including myself when looking at the individuals preferred method of communication, and everyone in the above list can give valid input in assessing for example swallowing by the speech therapists. This can include communication with the RN, GP for referral, to speaking with the catering chef and carers. By doing this with effective communication and documenting accurately we can ensure that everyoneââ¬â¢s input is maximized and as well as being written and passed on verbally it is put into practice. This results in the clients personalized care needs being met fully and that best practice is recognized and understood by all individuals. Best Practice may require looking at staff training and that as a centre we have access to any specialist information, which may be through central office or outside sources. Training underpins knowledge and is the cornerstone to maintaining exceptional standards. 1.3 Analyse the barriers and challenges to communication within own job role. We hear it said ad ver batum, effective open honest communication is fundamental like breathing. It is a skill and when people communicate well it is a reflection of how smoothly things operate. Communicating in an appropriate and Communication is key. Appropriate, open, honest, practical, down to earth and accurate are words which can be associated with effective communication. There are barriers and challenges, which we will look at. A barrier is something which blocks and there can be many in the realms of communication. Anything that interrupts the flow. One thing can be the language used. Eradicating abbreviations, and avoiding corporate or professional jargon makes everything simpler. Physical Barriers: Possibly the environment, such as loud tvs can have a distracting effect. Temperature, lighting and how people are located, either close to each other. People may be in different locations as we have with central office. Failure of management to cascade information. Failure of technological equipment. Physiological/Emotional Barriers: Personal difficulties can effect concentration, clients with lack of understanding, or memory loss due to their condition. This could also include poor eyesight or hearing difficulties Poor Understanding and language differences: Different nationalities and cultural differences, understanding accents and sayings can be amusing or an ambiguity of words and meanings but again a barrier for everyone. Misinterpretation of body language could have an impact. Attitudes within an organization: This can be because of poor management, weak leadership. People refusing to communicate if they feel a lack of motivation or unhappy with work. General resistance to change can be another factor and lack of understanding about a subject or material. Is the content difficult an complex to understand. Values and Beliefs: Everyones values and beliefs can create underlying barriers often without people realizing which results in different responses to how something is dealt with. Use of Power, Corporate Bullying and Aggressiveness: These can lead to potential barriers because people do not function naturally or work to the best of their abilty Any of the above can result in the failure of communication or in a result, which was not wanted. The audience has to be considered and ultimately it is my role to act immediately to ensure barriers are overcome. 1.4 Implement a strategy to overcome communication barriers By assessing the situation, and implementing a plan initially we can quickly establish what needs to be done. By doing this we can see any barriers, which may arise. When dealing with a client a plan of care will identify the problems and what they would like to achieve. By working with everyone within the multidisciplinary team appropriate assessments with Speech Therapists for example can arrange the necessary aids, training if necessary for staff to understand food consistencies, how the client is to be seated and that they are mindful of the clients needs. Working with all professionals, interpreters, audiologists, GPââ¬â¢s etc, as a manager ensuring staff are adequately trained in all areas and mandatory training is up to date can eradicate many issues. 1.5 Use different means of communication to meet different needs Verbal, non verbal signing, signage, flip charts, pictures, Ipads, audio books, hearing aids, hearing loops, telephone amplifiers. Just a few of the many different ways we use to communicate within the care centre and not forgetting touch. A small gesture such as touch can go a long way and make a huge impression. Verbally I have communications with many people from the clients, staff, families, G.Pââ¬â¢s etc and I have used an interpreter and translator for an Italian lady who was being assessed. Some research say the level of non verbal communication is as high as 80 %. There is so much we communicate through our body language, and we show how much we are engaged in communication by showing interest through our expressions. Flip charts and with new smaller technology such as IPads are a fantastic way to assist clients. Obviously hearing aids, and even the smart phones are voice activated and we have one client who loves the voice aid on the Iphone. We can see that we have a huge range and different ways of communicating. Essentially communication comes down to each individuals understanding and how we can best achieve that and making it personalized to each client.

Mathew Malefane's Painting of Nelson Mandela Mathew Malefane was born in Soweto; he was one of the privileges children and went to a school in Cape Town to study filmmaking. He now makes documentaries in Johannesburg. He taught himself to paint, and this painting Of Nelson Mandela made a very deep impression on all black Africans. Mathew Malefane chose to paint Nelson Mandela for a number of reasons. One could be as a role model to all black Africans as he fought for their rights and freedom. It could be symbolising slavery, or the Apartheid. A painting is a very good way to show emotion and feeling, and he could of painted Nelson Mandela, as he was delighted and pleased that he was set free. Nelson Mandela stood up for his rights and for the rights of all black people. He believes that they should be equal and respected as human beings. As he stood up and believes this he was put in prison for 20 years. As he was imprisoned there was many protests and riots, and when he was released he was voted for the government. He then won the election, and gave moving, emotive, and touching speeches, which won over all the Africans and he finally became the leader of the African National congress. In the painting, the uses of certain colours are very symbolic. The background is painted in blocks of yellow, green, and black. These are all the colours of his flag. The yellow is surrounding his head, and this symbolises him coming into the light and out of the dark prision he was in. T...

For generations, the gender role stereotype within the family has been the same: the father is a deserved pillar of family, and he has responsibility to be a breadwinner by going out to work to make money rather than staying at home as a homemaker. However, over the past few decades, the conventional gender role stereotypes of family has been largely changed to the point that an increasing number of men choose to be stay-at-home dads instead of being bread-earners. The at-home dad trend is that the father both takes on the role of primary caregiver for children and plays a major part in running the household. Although stay-at-home dads have presented a new perspective on the stereotype of family, some objectors who have satirized the at-home dad phenomenon claim that, despite a new awareness about full-time fathers, stay-at-home fathers are still unacceptable for the majority of general public. Because of this the at-home dad trend has difficulties in replacing the traditional family stereotype of gender roles. Nevertheless, the tendency of the stay-at-home dad is necessary for modern families to follow, being that not only a stay-at-home dad is a helpful decision for childrenââ¬â¢s education, but also a profitable choice for their wivesââ¬â¢ work. What is more, stay-at-home dads make remarkable efforts on marital equality and satisfaction in their marriage and they enjoy their fatherhood a lot. Hence, stay-at-home fathers should be encouraged and understood by the public instead of being ridiculed and prejudiced against. Fathersââ¬â¢ unique parenting style is greatly beneficial for childrenââ¬â¢s education and makes children become confident, perspicacious, and self-disciplined. Gender role stereotypes in family insists that fathers are not good at educating children compared with mothers, in terms of men do not have the everlasting patience of tutoring and they may more irritable when they are facing naughty children. Gender role stereotypes in family regards men as the most authoritative character in the family, while women are submissive followers with their husbands. Obsolete family stereotypes advocate that male chauvinism is a powerful guarantee to maintain the stability and permanence of the family. Therefore, women are in lower status than their husbands in marriage and they feel aggrieved and unfair, because they seem to have tons of housework that never finish es. What is more, womenââ¬â¢s spouses are too arrogant to understand their wivesââ¬â¢ toilsome dedication for the family. Fortunately, a stay-at-home dad is good for reversing the negative situation of a marriage. Schindler Zimmerman (350) found that leaving a parent at home to take care of children and do housework is a reasonable way to make a stay-at-home parent considerate to their partners. The role reversal of family conveys that stay-at-home dads are householders to perform all household duties so that they can deeply experience their wivesââ¬â¢ laborious work at home. Becomi ng stay-at-home dads allows such busy fathers to start new experiences with their children in which they can develop much closer and more trustful relationships with children. Stay-at-home fathers do not need to struggle with contradictory problems like how can they balance the family and the career or what kinds of ways should they use to make up for the absence of fathersââ¬â¢ company like breadwinning fathers do. Moreover, stay-at-home fathers escape from the strong competition in the workplace so that they can recover peace of mind. In a word, stay-at-home dads enjoy the pleasure of fatherhood as they take a more important and active role in bringing up their children. Therefore, the public should know that stay-at-home dads are most willing to witness their childrenââ¬â¢s growth with delighted and relieved minds, more acceptances for such gentle fathersââ¬â¢ love should be given. The stay-at-home father is an inevitable tendency for modern families which are profoundly influenced by the sustainable economic and social development. Children are the biggest beneficiaries to become strong, self-confident, and wise adults, since they can receive fire-new and high-efficiency education from their fathers. Many European philosophers willcall him the father of philosophy. Many scientists will call himthe father of science. To musicians, nonetheless, Pythagoras isthe father of music. According to Johnston, it was a much toldstory that one day the young Pythagoras was passing ablacksmiths shop and his ear was caught by the regularintervals of sounds from the anvil. When he discovered that thehammers were of different weights, it occured to him that theintervals might be related to those weights. Pythagoras wascorrect. Pythagorean philosophy maintained that all things arenu mbers. Based on the belief that numbers were the buildingblocks of everything, Pythagoras began linking numbers and music. Revolutionizing music, Pythagoras findings generated theoremsand standards for musical scales, relationships, instruments, andcreative formation. Musical scales became defined, andtaught. Instrument makers began a precision approach to deviceconstruction. Composers developed new attitudes of compositionthat encompassed a foundation of numeric value in addition tomelody. All three approaches were based on Pythagoreanphilosophy. Thus, Pythagoras relationship between numbers andmusic had a profound influence on future musical education,instrumentation, and composition. The intrinsic discovery made by Pythagoras was the potentialorder to the chaos of music. Pythagoras began subdividingdifferent intervals and pitches into distinct notes. Mathematicallyhe divided intervals into wholes, thirds, andhalves. Four distinct musical ratios were discovered: the tone,its fourth, its fifth, and its octave. (Johnston, 1989). Fromthese ratios the Pythagorean scale was introduced. This scalerevolutionized music. Pythagorean relationships of ratios heldtrue for any initial pitch. This discovery, in turn, reformedmusical education. With the standardization of music, musicalcreativity could be recorded, taught, and reproduced. (Rowell,1983). Modern day finger exercises, such as the Hanons, areneither based on melody or creativity. They are simply based onthe Pythagorean scale, and are executed from various initialpitches. Creating a foundation for musical representation, worksbecame recordable. From the Pythagorean scale and simplemathematical calculations, different scales or modes weredeveloped. The Dorian, Lydian, Locrian, and Ecclesiasticalmodes were all developed from the foundation of Pythagoras.(Johnston, 1989). The basic foun dations of musicaleducation are based on the various modes of scalarrelationships. (Ferrara, 1991). Pythagoras discoveries createda starting point for structured music. From this, diverseeducational schemes were created upon basic themes. Pythagorasand his mathematics created the foundation for musical educationas it is now known. According to Rowell, Pythagoras began his experimentsdemonstrating the tones of bells of different sizes. Bells ofvariant size produce different harmonic ratios. (Ferrara, 1991). Analyzing the different ratios, Pythagoras began definingdifferent musical pitches based on bell diameter, and density. Based on Pythagorean harmonic relationships, and Pythagoreangeometry, bell-makers began constructing bells with the principalpitch prime tone, and hum tones consisting of a fourth, a fifth,and the octave. (Johnston, 1989). Ironically or coincidentally,these tones were all members of the Pythagorean scale. Inaddition, Pythagoras initiated comparable experimentation withpipes of different lengths. Through this method of study heunearthed two astonishing inferences. When pipes of differentlengths were hammered, they emitted different pitches, andwhen air was passed through these pipes respectively, alikeresults were attained. This sparked a revolution in theconstruction of melodic percussive instruments, as well as thewind instruments. Mozart composed within the arena of his own mind. When he spoketo musicians in his orchestra, he spoke in relationship terms ofthirds, fourths and fifths, and many others. Within deepanalysis of Mozarts music, musical scholars have discovereddistinct similarities within his composition technique. According to Rowell, initially within a Mozart composition,Mozart introduces a primary melodic theme. He then reproducesthat melody in a different pitch using mathematicaltransposition. As clearly stated above, Pythagoras correlation betweenmusic and numbers influenced musical members in every aspect ofmusical creation. What Pathagoras found so wonderful wasthat his elegant, abstract train of thought produced somethingthat people everywhere already knew to be aesthetically pleasing. Ultimately music is how our brains intrepret the arithmetic, orthe sounds, or the nerve impulses and how our interpretationmatches what the performers, instrument makers, andcomposers thought they were doing during their respectivecreation. Pythagoras simply mathematized a foundation for theseoccurances. He had discovered a connection between arithmeticand aesthetics, between the natural world and the human soul.
